A Picture Of Me

SPECIFICS

Schooling / Work

MY RESUM can be found here (slightly outdated). Note: I am working and not looking for work.

I started off acedemia with 8 years at Carisbrooke Elementary School in North Vancouver. I can't remember that time much. Usually just flashes in dreams. From there I spent Grades 8-10 at Balmoral Junior Secondary. That which is dead still carries on. Grade 11-12 were at Carson Graham Secondary. This was the best time in my life so far. The friends I met here are still the closest to my heart even though I haven't seen them in a while. Post-secondary learning began at Capilano College in North Vancouver. The first two years my degree (done in three years) were done here. A very fine institution for learning. The rest of my Computing Science degree was done at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC, Canada. I received my Bachelor of Science in Spring of 1997.

Now am working at Stormix Technologies as a programmer on Storm Linux.

Music

In my spare time I play, sing and write music (although not anything lately). I have composed several rock tunes, a symphony, and made several attempts at sacred choral works. All of which have been heard by only a few. Some of the more recent (within the last decade) titles are Darkness, Dressed in Black, Clearer, Anything Better Than Her, Susan, And Her Valorous Hair, Christine, and And My Mind Wonders My main instrument is voice but I have a modest MIDI setup that includes a Korg M1 synthesizer, a very old, but still useful Korg Poly-800, a Yamaha FB-01 Sound Module, a 8 channel (not enough) mixer, a Yamaha SPX-900 signal processor and a 4-track (not enough either) recorder, plus my brother's guitar and my mother's piano. On my PentiumII/266 PC I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 8. Other music interests can be found on My Shadows Page and My Music Page

MY REVIEW: Naramata Centre Music Week(Officially known as the Naramata Summer School of Music Arts)

Music Week 1998 - July 5th - 10th

Disclaimer: I am in no way connected with the Centre or NSSMA. I am just a participant. So don't hold me to anything, OK?

Well this year was hot, weather-wise. Marc Haffso was the Adult Clinician this year. He had previously conductioned the youth choir which I was part of two of three years. The music had a more modern flavour this year (i don't mean that it sounded weird) with many current composers and no Bach, Handel, etc. Even the Gloria we did had an African flavour. Actually , there was a lot of African music this year from the various choirs. It was almost too much. Skye was not with me this year as she had to work. So it seemed to many that I was moping around ;-). Kyla was the only 'friend' that was there this year. But I enjoyed the experience none the less. Not bad for my 16th attendance although the worship was typical United Church.

The other clinicians were Brian Farrell for the Youth Choir who had me exhasted just watching him. Marc's wife, Judy did the two children's choirs. Next year all three will be back although Marc is just doing a Conducting Session. Jon Leavitt will be the Adult Clinician. I look forward to that.

Music Week 1997 - July 6th - 11th

The Music Week of 1997 was, to me, very mediocre. The clinicians for this year were Marilyn Perkins for the Adult Choir, Pat (and Barry) Miller for the Youth, and Norma Sharpe for the Junior and Primary Choirs. The music for the adult choir was what Skye called "doable", meaning not easy but not very difficult either. I also didn't find it too difficult :-(.

For both of us seeing the Millers again was quite nice. For most of my years in the youth choir (almost 10 years), Pat and Barry were the accompanists and Skye was in one of Pat's choirs at home.

As for friends, Jeremy Derksen was there this year after skipping a few. He is a pretty good friend of mine and good guitarist as well and it was great seeing him again. Mark and Kyla Rodgers also attended for the 20th time and our very good friends. And my girlfriend, Skye who stayed with my family this year, completed our little group of street wanderers.

Music Week 1996 - July 7th - 12th

This year was the greatest one that I can remember (I've been coming since '83). The clinicians this year were Allen Pote for the Adult Choir, Geordie Roberts for the Youth Choir, Susan Pote for the Junior and Primary Choirs and they did a wonderful job with their choirs. Allen, of course, is just a great composer and director as well as a very nice person. I've had him three times now (Music Week 87 Youth Choir, the Church Music Symposium in Vancouver, and this year's Music Week) and he will be at the Church Music Symposium in January that Jocelyn Pritchard puts on. -(NOTE:Feb 97, Allen Pote was his usual self as we did Schubert's Mass in G with an orchestra. After the first night Allen came up to me a said "I saw your Homepage!". Anyway we all had fun and learned some new things.)

Geordie is just a cool guy. I've never had him as a director but he seems to work with youth very well. Susan Pote also did great work with the children's choirs.

The Adult choir did 7 pieces (plus others we just practiced), three of which were Allen's - Come, Let Us Sing, a NSSMA commssioned piece that all choirs sang entitled Glory to God in the Highest! (much better than the published version), and an arranged piece called Two Songs of Devotion which is very lovely. The other pieces performed at the Celebration by the Adult choir were "I will Sing with the Spirit" by John Rutter, "Festival Sanctus" by John Leavitt, Mendelssohn's "How Lovely are the Messengers", and "Down by the Riverside" by John Rutter which is a real fun piece to do.

Now on the social side of things this year was very memorable. I got a chance to see some good friends again like: Andrew, Daniel, Geoff, Anne, Susan, Tim (couldn't leave him out), Valerie (no way am I gonna call you Meg), Melissa, Mark, Kyla, Jennifer, Jeff, and Peter who is a very interesting and cool guy (a great trumpet player and he can eat two cups at once!). I can't think of anyone else so please forgive me if I've forgotten you. Oh I didn't forget Skye. This year was special because Skye and I got together. There's more about her here.

So a pretty good week this year was had be me and many others. Even the worship services weren't that annoying (my opinion). I do remember Christ being mentioned a couple of times. Oh and it seems I have to make more than a few copies of my tape for people.

Music Week 1995 - July 9th - 14th

In the summer of 1995 (like all summers) I went to Music Week 1995 at Naramata Centre (for Continuing Education) in Naramata B.C. And to summarize the week: "NO CHICKS!" Or to put it more acurately, "No chicks around my age that weren't married!". I was in the Adult Choir (for the most part) and we had Linda Spevechek as our director. She sucks. I've had her before and she is not organized at all. When I go to a rehearsal, I expect to practice the music. We usually didn't. She talks to much. By Thursday night I joined the Youth Choir. I sang there and at the concert we kicked ass. It was great to see some good friends again like Susan, Kyla, Mark, Andrew and to get to know some people better like Skye, and Anne (If your name isn't on this list, don't worry, you're in my thoughts). So, all in all, this year sucked but I'd do it all again (Next summer is Allen Pote which should be great).
