VERSION 2.0 IS OUT!!!

On June 9th, 1996 Linus Torvalds released version 2.0.0. A short and incomplete list of new and updated features (quoted from Linus' anouncement ):

There are a few things that must be updated if 2.0.x is going to be installed. A complete list can be found in the Documentation/Changes file of the source tree as well as on Linux v2 Information HQ.

Get it from your closest friendly linux ftp site!

Personal Linux History

I am a proud user and advocate the Linux operating system, a freely distributable Unix clone for the ix86 system (somewhat misleading since there are ports to 680x0, Sparc, Mips, PPC, and Alpha).

I first learned of the system. through a friend at school (Elder Matias) back in 1992 and followed co.l. until I was convinced that it was more than a toy for hackers. My first kernel was 1.0.8 and installed in April 1994. I would have done so earlier but I had incompatible hardware (PS/2) before 1994 and the family computer wasn't one for playing around with.

Anyway, since my first installation, I've installed Linux machines on my coop jobs, as a home desktop, and now router, and can recompile the kernel with one hand tied behind my back (people who know me will now say that I only type with one hand anyway and it's not that hard to compile a kernel).

Currently, I'm using 2.0.35, with XFree 3.2 on my IP Masquerading router.

Here is a listing of the notable software I use or used on my desktop Linux machine before I had needed the extra space for work

EDITORS pico, vi, Emacs Scriptum Edith Lyx
NETWORKING Samba, smbfs Apache NCSA Mosaic Netscape Navigator Lynx DIP, pppd IPFWADM
GRAPHICS Gimp ImageMagick XV Mesa

A Few Links (some old)

The following are some main links as well as some interesting ones in no particular order. Obviously, I'm not going to list all the Linux links I've encountered. That's what these pages do. So hold your breath and welcome to Linux!
